Company and City: Indigeneities and Modernities in the Archives- Graduate Workshop in Research Methods

This workshop will provide students with an opportunity to explore archival research methods in the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives (HBCA) and the surrounding community and institutions of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It will be led by Adele Perry, an historian of nineteenth century colonialism and Indigenous peoples, and Mary Jane Logan McCallum, an historian of Indigenous and modern history. The HBCA—an enormous archive that documents the history of North America over a 250-year period—is an unparalleled resource for studying the history of Indigenous peoples and the fur-trade in North America, and has been added to UNESCO’s “Memory of the World Register.” Readings, discussions, and research will consider histories of trade, contact and exploration in light of current methodological topics in American Indian and Indigenous studies.
