Ashley Riley Sousa is a PhD candidate in the History department.  She earned her B.A. in History from the University of California, Davis with a minor in Native American Studies and did graduate work at Portland State University.  Her dissertation, “Indian Labor in Nineteenth-Century California: The Case of New Helvetia,” reconsiders the terms on which Native workers engaged in California’s rancho economy in the 1840s, arguing that Plains Miwok and Valley Nisenan workers actively shaped their own work experiences and the development of capitalism in California.
